Bike share launch

Thank you to everyone that came out on the windy, cold day that we had. The launch was a success! We got quite a few people to sign up and the system now live. Head over to the town if you are looking for a seasonal membership, if you want a daily or monthly you can head to the town office, dreamcatcher hostel or the Whistle stop cafe (campground). There is more information on pricing and details on the bike share tab.

Cycling around town

With the onset of spring and more people out riding and walking around. I am looking for a way to encourage people who ride bikes on the sidewalk to ride them on the road.

If you think of any ideas, please let me know!

Riding on the sidewalk is not only illegal in British Columbia, it is also dangerous. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Bikes are included as vehicles under the Motor Vehicle act. Bikes must obey all signs and right of ways that cars have to adhere too. There is a fine for riding on the sidewalk, i am unsure of how much it is. Having more bikes on the roads, also makes it safer for other cyclists. As drivers become aware of more bikes on the road, they will give more room to bikes.

Drivers are also required to give adequate space when over taking, it is best to give 3ft or 1m of room. Cyclists can travel at speeds of 25km/h without effort, road cyclists can travel at speeds over 60km/h. Cars that cut of cyclists can be ticketed under many violations of the Motor Vehicle act.

When it comes to the bridge, the best thing to do is to take the lane. By this it means ride in the centre of the lane so that you are unable to be overtaken. It is within the legal right of cyclists to do this. As there is no safe overtaking opportunity for cars. The 30 seconds or less that it takes to ride across the bridge is not a large amount of time in the scheme of things. Patience needs to be practiced.

I am hoping to have a discussion with the local RCMP about how to enforce the regulations and what we can do to encourage lawful riding around Golden. So please get back with ideas or suggestions on what we all can do to encouage people to ride on the road. You can comment on here, or contact me at luke at goldenactivetransportation dot com.

UPDATE on Highway 95 resurfacing

After contacting a few different parties, I am pleased to announce that the highway between Nicholson and Golden will have 2 metre shoulders in the spring. CSRD Representative, Ron Oszust discussed with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and along with information found on the MoTI’s website we were able to persuade them to reconsider their position and include the shoulders that are safe for biking. It is great to see the Ministry able to adapt to new information presented to them.

The advantages of having wider shoulders are tremendous. It will be safer for commuting back and forward between Nicholson and Golden. This gives families living in Nicholson another option to driving into town.

The increased shoulders will also enable tourism to benefit as well, with people using the shoulders to get out to Reflection Lake, Moonrakers and beyond.

One thing that the Ministry is wondering about is how many people would use a grade separated path. So with that in mind what were looking for is volunteers to do bike/pedestrian counts and also possibly to go door to door and conduct a short survey. The cost involved in the grade separated path is huge, so it is important to not have a lame duck of a trail that won’t be used. If you would like to be involved in getting funding for this study or helping with the count. Please either leave a comment or contact me at luke at Active Transportation dot com.

For future reference the MoTI Bike policy is located here. It is great to see the Ministry moving in a sustainable direction, that supports all forms of transportation.

Highway 95 resurfacing

After a rough winter, the Government of British Columbia has realised that Highway 95 needs to be resurfaced. The work is going to take place in the spring, and be completed between Nicholson and Golden. This is great news for all the people that drive in these parts, as the job done last year, wasn’t the best. What they are neglecting is the fact that the shoulders are going to stay the same width. The shoulders on average are going to remain at the current 0.6m wide (some are going to be up to 2m wide). This width is not enough to safely pass a cyclist on the road. The majority of people do move over if there is no oncoming traffic. What is neglected at this point out is the draft behind a semi or logging truck passing that close, is enough to push you off the road, or worse, into traffic.

The road from Nicholson to Golden is a major artery into town. It is used extensively by cars daily. In the summer it is a biking corridor. Many people commute by bike to get to the Moonrakers, Reflection lake, town and back and beyond. The widening of the shoulders on the this part of the highway would not only make it safer, but also increase the use of the shoulder for other travel.

I enjoy recreational riding around town, and road riding. Highway 95, could be a tourist mecca if the shoulders are widened, the beautiful mountains and road winding though the valley bottom. There is nothing that can compete with that. The TV spot on Global TV recently showed just how beautiful this area is. Why aren’t we increasing the shoulders of the highways for people to commute by bike? Cycling is one of the fastest growing transportation means in North America. Including wider shoulders will only increase the draw of this beautiful area, year round. Imagine a shorter shoulder season, more tourist money in our economy.

Walking hard

I have been thinking about the snow removal job of the Town, and how they do an awesome job, cleaning the roads and making sure that everyone can get around town easily. Then i look at the sidewalks, they are plowed yes. Which i am thankful for. They are how ever, not done very well. The linkage is poor, the safest places at times is to walk in the middle of the street. Why, cause well that is the less mucky, less iced up place to walk. I do know some facts of life, more people drive than walk around town, therefore the roads are cleaner.

Why should walkers feel like second class citizens though? Shouldn’t the town be out on a nice sunny warm day, cleaning the paths and sidewalks for people to get around. Removing the ice from the sidewalks? Shouldn’t business owners be forced to clean their own sidewalks rather than the town do it for them? We already have the Bylaw in place to enforce it all. I know that out the front of my place, i started cleaning the sidewalk on a sunny 3c+ day and there was at least 5cm of ice before the sidewalk.

I don’t think that you would see an iced up street and see cars sliding all over the road for very long, but you do see the sidewalks in such conditions.

If we truly want to get more people out walking and riding, we have to start by cleaning the sidewalks before the roads. Giving them the priority they deserve. This might just encourage people to walk instead of drive around town.

The town does a wonderful job at cleaning the streets, I do wonder however, if that money that was used to clean all the streets and alleyways could be used in a better manner? Repaving, increasing the size of parks, beautifying the town in spring time etc.

Yes we have snow, and lots of it. Should that mean that people don’t walk because of it? No.

This is just something to think about, talk about with friends, and notice how poor the walking infrastructure can be in town. Is that the kind of town that you want, if not go talk with Councillors and Town staff and let them know you want better, not just for you but for everyone in town.

UPDATE:

Councillor Jaswal just informed me via Facebook of the following,

“Just so guys know, I did bring up your concerns at council. Had heard the same thing from a few other people as well. Anyhow, I guess the sidewalk cleaner thing was broken for a bit….It is now fixed. And Chris also said that the material that they have been using is not working so that have to figure something else out… I think that they are going to try and make the sidewalks better…all this melt freeze is not very helpful! “

Don’t you hate it when…

You have to shovel or scrape your bike off…..it won’t start….. you run late cause of the road conditions…. get stuck in traffic…..

Luckily i don’t have to worry about any of those things when i’m on my bike. Life is simpler and easier to get around. You should give it a try too!

Snow, and lots of it

All the snow over the last week has made me think…

How can we use the excess snow that gets shipped out to slow traffic and make riding and walking safer?

Can we make temporary bulb outs on all street corners to slow turning traffic?

Can we use the plowed snow as a barrier and create a side walk behind it?

What other things can you think of for snow, besides sliding or gliding on?

It seems that the roads get cleared much more regulary than the sidewalks? Why is that, i understand that Hwy 95 needs to be cleaned regularly. Why side streets? I understand some are more important than others, like 9th, it is a major street in town. How ever i find that my street 11th, gets plowed before 8th st where the ambulance is. Something doesn’t seem right about that. I would rather have the ambulance get out faster than me being about to bike down the road faster.

Give me your ideas and maybe we can get council to try some things. Snow removal is expensive, so if it can stay in town, wouldn’t that be better?

UPDATE: Here is a link to the Town’s current policy.

Bike share soft launch

The Golden Community Bike Share had a successful soft launch today. Today was the day that the community got a chance to come preview the new bike share. GCBS had free hot chocolate and a BBQ on the go. We had quite a few people come look at the new system, the Mayor, several Councillors and also CAO David Allen and other staff members were around to check things out.

Over all it was a successful day. The fog made it a little chilly standing around, towards the end the sun shone and the solar panels on the stations received lots of beautiful sunlight.

There was lots of talk about pricing, so let me clear the air on that. Pricing has not been determined as yet. It is something that we are working on this winter. There will be various memberships available and these will be advertised around town when it get closer to the release date. There are several details yet to be worked out.

All involved with the project are really excited to see it come this far, and can’t wait for the spring when it is launched for real. There is going to be lots of events going on and all the representatives that were involved in this are going to be available. Keep tuned to this blog for updates through out the winter on developments!
